Top Schools Honoured At Mayoral Awards Ceremony
Approximately 75 schools from around eThekwini Municipality were honoured for the excellent results produced for the 2018 academic year.
The awards ceremony was hosted at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre on 25 January. Congratulating the learners, Mayor Zandile Gumede said the schools had contributed immensely to the 78.2% pass rate achieved. “We are proud of your achievements.
Our Government is serious about education because it remains the only hope we have for the complete liberation of a young mind.
Education plays an important role in equalising individuals’ life chances, promoting economic mobility, eradicating poverty and reducing inequality.”
Echoing the Mayor’s sentiments, MEC of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube, also congratulated the teachers for their sterling work. “Teaching is not a profession, but a calling. We know that in the classroom you face a lot of challenges and we applaud you for your perseverance”. Dube-Ncube emphasised that the completion of the secondary phase of schooling was not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter in a person’s life. “You are our future and we have great expectations from you. Do not lose focus, continue to shine and reach for your dreams.”
The categories included schools that improved their 2018 matric pass rate by more than 30%, schools that obtained 100% matric pass rate, top ten students from eThekwini District and top ten students from disadvantaged schools. Awards included bursaries, trophies and other essential education tools that were given to learners who had excelled.
