The Tsogo sun Amashova classic cycle race will take place on Sunday 20 October 2019 from Pietermaritzburg to Durban

The Tsogo Sun Amashova Classic Cycle Race will take place on Sunday 21st October 2018, from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. The race is an annual cycle event that attracts ±15 000 cyclists.

The main race will start at 06h15 in Pietermaritzburg with a 160km Grand Fondo, followed by a 106km at 06h45. The 65km ride will start at Cato Ridge at 05h30 and the 35km fun ride is expected to start at 05h30 from Hillcrest. The cut off time for the race is 15h00 and the prize giving, at 11h30.

Durban Metropolitan Police Service will police the race from Georgedale Road through Outer and Inner West Regions onto the N3 (Westbound) down Monty Naicker and left into Walnut Road continuing into Masabalala Yengwa Avenue, right upon the promenade under the M4 Bridge, and right towards Suncoast Casino.

ROUTE 106KMS (eThekwini Region): From R103 past Camperdown Village, the cyclists will take a right over the N3, turn left at the tall gum trees and go parallel to N3 passing Georgedale Road. They will continue straight into Doonrug Drive, taking the first right into Vrijheid Avenue at Cato Ridge, turn left into Drew Lane, left into School Road, and left into Selby Road under the subway, right at the four way stop passing Dunbar Spar, continuing along the R103 through Harrisons Flats, at R103 / Inchanga / Drummond /1000 Hills the race turns left onto R103, pass the Comrades Marathon Wall of houour, pass the Rob Roy Hotel and Kearsney College, where the route rapidly begins the descend down Botha’s Hill, right upon Kassier Road where they link up with the M13 at Shongweni.

Continue along M13, entering Durban at 45th Cutting proceeding East upon King Cetshwayo Highway, left (contra flow) onto the Sherwood / Mayville off ramp from N3, over the Elliott Viaduct, proceeding East (contra flow) down Monty Naicker Street, turning left into Walnut Road, continue South upon Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (contra flow), turn right at the pedestrian crossing at Moses Mabhida Stadium where the riders will enter the promenade to collect their finisher’s medals, continuing under the M4 bridge to finish outside Suncoast Casino on the promenade.

Outer West Region: Roads closures are to be implemented 04h15
Inner West Region: Road closures to be implemented at 04h30
EThekwini Central: Roads closures to be implemented around 05h00

REQUEST TO THE PUBLIC
  1. Please familiarise yourself with the above route in so far as it impacts your Region.
  2. Travel for purposes of access and egress to/from places of residence, business, leisure etc, to be planned beforehand, in relation to the route, to avoid undue delays.
  3. Motorists are urged to co-operate with Police Officers deployed on the ground, and obey all road closures and traffic diversions implemented for the safety of cyclists and the success of this World famous event.
Otherwise the Durban Metro Police are ready to ‘police’ the AMASHOVA cycle race and ensure that the good reputation of the EThekwini Municipality to host this flagship yearly event, is kept intact.

To ensure sufficient peripheral coverage of the event, deployments have been arranged from various Regional Police Stations of the Metro Police, some ‘elite’ Special Units, and even from the Police Academy.
