SUKAMUVA INFORMAL SETTLEMENT FIRE CLAIMS TWO LIVES
EThekwini Municipality's Fire and Emergency Services together with Disaster Management teams, responded swiftly to extinguish a fire that broke out at Sukamuva Informal Settlement last night.
The devastating fire broke out at approximately 11pm last night, 27 June, and raged into the early hours of this morning at the settlement in Ward 71, Crossmore, South of Durban.
The blaze destroyed about 15 informal structures and tragically claimed the lives of two residents.
A further 22 families, including young children were left displaced.
The Municipality's emergency services responded swiftly to the scene following an urgent call.
The teams worked tirelessly throughout the night to extinguish the blaze and assist victims on the ground.
The cause of the fire remains unknown and is currently under investigation.
The Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate is on site, providing critical humanitarian assistance including food, blankets, and emergency shelter.
