SOLDIERS AMONG 32 DRIVERS ARRESTED DURING ROADBLOCKS
Two South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members were among 32 drivers arrested over the weekend for road traffic offences within eThekwini.
Durban Metro Police braved the heavy rain and conducted high-visibility roadblocks and multidisciplinary operations, targeting drunk driving and other traffic violations.
One SANDF member was arrested for drunk driving, while another was arrested for assaulting a Metro Police Officer and obstructing him in performing his duties.
A total of 15 drivers were arrested during operations on Friday, and 17 drivers - including the two soldiers - were arrested on Saturday for drinking and driving.
Durban Metro Police Spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu said the soldiers were processed at the SAPS Wentworth Police Station.
“The first soldier was arrested for drunk driving, while the second was arrested for obstruction of duty and assault on a police officer,” said Zungu.
“Even in heavy rain, our officers are out in full force, conducting roadblocks and high-visibility patrols across the City. If you choose to drink and drive, we will find you and arrest you,” he added.
He further emphasised that operations will intensify throughout the week and over weekends to ensure the safety of all road users.
“As we approach the summer holidays, road recklessness tends to increase. We want to assure the public that our officers are prepared and vigilant, and will act decisively against any traffic violations,” Zungu concluded.
