Severe Wind Warning For EThekwini

ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SEVERE WIND WARNING FOR ETHEKWINI

EThekwini Municipality urges residents to remain vigilant and take proactive safety measures following a Level 1 severe wind warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) for today and tomorrow, 16 and 17 October.

Forecasts predict strong winds reaching speeds of up to 75 km/h, particularly in coastal areas.

These winds are expected to cause significant sand build-up along coastal routes across KwaZulu-Natal, with the eThekwini region expected to be significantly affected.

The adverse weather may further cause localised infrastructure damage and disruptions to harbours and ports.

The strong winds are linked to a cold front and an accompanying high-pressure system, increasing the risk of small vessels capsizing, difficulty in navigation, and other sea-related hazards.

The Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services are on high alert to respond swiftly to any incidents.

Residents are advised to stay indoors where possible, secure loose items around their homes, and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak wind periods.

Motorists should exercise extreme caution, especially on bridges, coastal roads, and when passing high-sided vehicles.

Mariners, small boat operators, and fishermen are urged not to launch and to seek shelter, as coastal activities may become extremely hazardous.

This weather alert remains subject to change, and SAWS will issue updates as conditions change.

The Municipality will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely communication to ensure public safety.

For emergencies, the public can contact the City’s Disaster Management Centre on 031 361 0000.
