Series Of Activities Planned To Commemorate Transport Month

ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2 OCTOBER 2025

Several exciting and informative initiatives are planned as part of Transport Month commemorations, which is observed in October.

EThekwini Municipality, through the eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA), has planned several activations and events aimed at improving access to information, raise awareness on transport services, and strengthen communication with commuters and stakeholder from the public transport sector. To kick off Transport Month, the City will launch its new Public Transport Information Centre, designed to ease access to reliable public transport information and services. The new facility will offer a range of convenient communication channels, including a toll-free number, WhatsApp line, and a dedicated email address, enabling commuters to receive quick, accurate updates and assistance relating to their public transport.

ETA will also roll-out a ‘Move to MUVO’ campaign to encourage commuters to utilise the cashless MUVO card on public transport. Activations will take place at key transport hubs and busy commuter routes around Durban to educate the public about the many benefits of the MUVO card. Essentially, the card is more convenient, secure, and reliable for daily travel, and is the future fare system of public transport in Durban.

In an effort to accelerate improved public transport through GO!Durban, ETA will host various regional roadshows with the bus and mini-bus taxi industries, as part of the implementation plan for the new public transport strategy. These engagements precede the major milestone marking the official start of the GO!Durban contract negotiations at the end of October. Road safety initiatives will be ongoing throughout Transport Month including creating awareness among communities, pedestrians, scholars, and public transport operators. Other activities for Transport Month include a planned launch of Cycle Sunday - a first for Durban, aimed at increasing awareness of shared road spaces among pedestrians, motorists, and non-motorised transport.

A new website, which will include information for the City’s public transport services will be activated later this month. These initiatives align with the objectives of Transport Month, the annual campaign of the National Department of Transport which highlights the importance of safe, accessible, and integrated transport in driving both social and economic development. Since its inception in 2005, Transport Month has served as a platform for raising awareness and encouraging participation from civil society and business in shaping a transport system that supports growth and improves quality of life.
