RELOCATION OF OVER 400 FLOOD VICTIMS FROM MASS CARE SHELTERS TO TEMPORARY HOMES IN PINETOWN
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, accompanied by the City's Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee Chairperson Councillor Thembo Ntuli, today led the relocation of flood victims from the Tshelimnyama Community Hall to the Pinetown Student Village. This is part of government’s efforts to relocate all flood victims to family-friendly accommodation before Christmas.
The families were relocated from mass care centres in Nazareth, Mpola, Maose, and KwaSanti.
To-date, 96 of the 135 mass care centres that accommodated displaced residents have been closed.
Government is committed to ensuring that flood victims staying at mass care centres are relocated before Christmas.
Siphiwe Mngadi, who was staying at a mass care centre, is grateful to be relocated.
“Today is a wonderful day for me. I was staying in a community hall and I am happy that my family and I will spend Christmas in our home. While it is temporary accommodation, we are grateful to government for assisting us,” he said.
Premier Dube-Ncube said the provincial government will facilitate the relocation of families housed at mass care centres before Christmas.
“We have mobilised all available resources and are making every effort to ensure that we rehouse flood victims. We thank affected residents for their patience as our province recovers from the floods earlier this year,” said.
She said government is working tirelessly to fast-track the relocation of flood victims.
“We have made significant progress if you consider that over 14 449 people were displaced after the floods, with 4 983 people left homeless. And now we are very close to closing all mass care centres. We wish to express our profound appreciation to all communities for the patience and understanding as we continue to work tirelessly to rebuild our province,” concluded Premier Dube-Ncube.
