The Municipality is addressing service delivery backlogs through the multi-disciplinary Rapid Response Team (RRT). The team was deployed to Soldiers Way, Denis Hurley Street and Bertha Mkhize Street last week, 23 to 27 August to address service delivery challenges.

The team issued traffic fines, targeted illegal trading, noise pollution, the washing of taxis on the road and the removal of litter in the drainage system. They also focused on clearing illegal dumping, cleaning unhygienic areas, repairing streetlights, fixing potholes, and addressing health related issues including fire hazards and non-compliance to by-laws by business owners.

Acting City Manager Musa Mbhele said the team consists of all the service delivery units to undertake intensive clean-up operations.
“The team comprises of service delivery units that work speedily to resolve service delivery challenges. We have adopted an approach of collaboration among units to streamline operations and ensure efficiency in our work,” said Mbhele.

He said compliance to building regulations, health issues, and the payment of Municipal services are among the areas the team targets. The team also prioritises the removal of illegal dumping, road maintenance, repairing streetlights, pruning trees, fixing leaking water pipes, removing illegal electricity connections, clearing blocked stormwater drains, and enforcing by-laws.

Mbhele said Bhambayi, Pinetown, Mayville and Bonela are some of the areas that have been cleaned by the RRT recently.

He said the public can play their part by disposing of waste in the bins provided.
