Re: Media Statement And Invitation: Mama Zandile Gumede Foundation Handing Over A Brand New Keyboard To Mqhawe High School In Mzinyathi Area (Inanda)
Mayor Zandile Gumede through her Foundation: MAMA ZANDILE GUMEDE FOUNDATION this Friday, 05 April 2019 will visit Mqhawe High School in Inanda near Mzinyathi in Ward 103 to hand over a brand new musical keyboard to the school.
The visit comes after the Foundation visited the school as part of their promotion of education and skills development in the Durban and surrounding schools. The project has been helping a number of schools where the foundation is able to source some interventions that assist the development of schools through a series of its donors.
“We were asked by one of the former learners of Mqhawe High School who was at the time a student teacher and volunteering his spare time at the Mayor’s Foundation, he had asked the Foundation to invite influential musicians to visit the school’s music department- a rationale to encourage this semi- rural school and to offer motivational talks to the learners. At this visit, we brought a number of items to the school including girls- sanitary towels as donated amongst other, by Kaizer Chiefs Football Club. It is also during this visit that the music class asked the Foundation to help them with the musical instruments including the keyboard- and indeed we are happy to be going back to the school to fulfil our promise we made on behalf of the Mayor and Patron, Zandile Gumede.”- said CEO, Wiseman Mkhize.
The Foundation will be accompanied by Mr. Moses Tembe, a well known business man from Durban. When Mayor Gumede asked Mr. Tembe to contribute towards this request, he did not hesitate and donated through his family Trust: Moses Tembe Family Trust. The Trust had pledged to support Mama Zandile Gumede for 10 years since the re- launch of the Foundation in 2017.
We are encouraged by an overwhelming number of well known Durban artists and personalities who will accompany the Mayor to this worthy course towards improvement of education. The likes of famous actors and actresses from Durban- shot famous soapies and telenovela including Mama Thembi Mtshali- Jones, Leleti Khumalo as well as actors from EHostela will be part of the entourage. Musicians such as Jumbo, DJ Siyanda and Madanon are likely to join the Foundation as well.
Learners at Mqhawe High School will be treated on a moral regeneration and encouragements from their TV heroes. Mayor Gumede is very excited about this as she advocates positively for all initiatives that support education within the province, particularly in Durban. She has pledged to continue working hard in supporting arts back to the schools by visiting as many schools and art centres with key interventions through her office with provincial government endorsed programme of “Operation Sukuma Sakhe” which has also mandated the municipalities to intervene on local social challenges and infrastructure developmental programmes, also to bring both business and government on board on programmes of nation building.
“Through my Foundation, I get an opportunity to engage differently with the communities, they are the foot soldiers who are able to get out there first when I am unable to due to my ever hectic government and political duties. Through Mama Zandile Gumede Foundation, we have assisted in a number of social ills, thus made positive interventions. In a space of two years, we have contributed over a value of R2,5 million through community building projects via our supporters. These projects include:
• Maoti No. 1 school renovation, supported by Sibaya Community Trust to a value of R1,2 million rand.
• Marian Park Primary School computer laboratory- that was unveiled in 2018 with a cost of R250, 000.
• Kwa Mashu drug rehab new kitchen installation
• Mbumbulu – Mbambangwe School renovation
• Chesterville Secondary School roof and water pipes rejuvenation
• A number of bursaries, including international scholarship to a lady who is now a qualified Black “prosthetic therapist”, former intern with both uZalo and Imbewu- now qualified from both USA and UK.
These and many more are the projects we keep on doing out in our communities and we are pleading for more support from our business community, in order for us to do more”- said Mayor Gumede.
