Rabies Vaccination Gets Underway in Duban South Areas

ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

04 APRIL 2022

EThekwini Municipality, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, will be embarking on vaccination campaign against rabies.

The rabies vaccination campaign will run from 5 to 11 April in Merebank, Austerville, Clairwood, and the Bluff areas.

The vaccination is free. Pet owners must bring their animal’s certificate from the previous vaccinations. If they do not have one, a certificate will be issued on the day.

The campaign aims to curb the spread of rabies and to improve rabies knowledge among communities.

In the City, rabies is prevalent, with the south subdistrict being mostly affected. This is followed by the west sub-district and north sub-district.

Domestic dogs are the most common reservoir of the virus, with more than 99 percent of human deaths related to rabies being caused by dog-mediated rabies.

While government has measures in place to prevent and treat rabies cases, there is a challenge of people who have been bitten by a rabid animal delaying seeking medical treatment. Another challenge is patients not completing their scheduled treatment.

Members of the public can call 031-3115150/ 031-3115153/031-3115162 for more information on the vaccination schedule.
