Public services interrupted

ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
12 APRIL 2022

PUBLIC SERVICES INTERRUPTED

The public is informed that some of eThekwini Municipality services are disrupted due to the severe flooding in all areas of eThekwini.

EThekwini has suffered an unprecedented amount of damage of infrastructure though landslides, flooding and washaways overnight.

The City’s emergency personnel have been responding to calls throughout the night and have been working around the clock to restore services as soon as possible. The City calls on the public to be patient and understanding as there will be delays in restoring services.

Water and Electricity
Numerous areas have suffered water and electricity outages caused by loss or damage to infrastructure.
There are several major high voltage substations which have flooded and are currently inaccessible. Crews will be working in shifts until the high voltage supplies are restored. Some substations will need to be rebuilt and this may cause extended delays.

The call centres are also experiencing a high volume of calls. The public is urged to use alternative contact details to report outages.

Water: Whats App – 073 148 3477 or email eservices@durban.gov.za
Electricity: Whats App- 076 791 2449 or email electricity.faults@durban.gov.za

The public are urged to contact the Emergency and Disaster call center on 031 361 0000 to report any emergency situation, including fallen trees that are blocking the road.

Beaches and Pools
Beaches and pools are closed until further notice due to hazardous conditions.

Cemeteries
Due to the flooding, the City will unfortunately not be able to accept any request for burials until the weather clears. This is due to the ground being saturated as a result of the heavy rainfall. The city calls on the public to postpone any burials until such time that the City cemeteries are able to conduct these again.

Refuse Removal
The City would like to advise residents of the suspension of street sweeping and refuse removal services.  Residents are requested to keep refuse inside their properties to avoid spillages and blockage to storm water drains. Garden sites are also not operational and therefore cannot accept any waste during this period.

Bus Services
Bus services have been temporarily disrupted due to flooding at depots. Many routes are inaccessible.

Health Care
Healthcare facilities are not operational today, 12 April, due to the severe impact of the heavy rains which left infrastructure damaged and the staff being unable to get to work due to road closures.

The clinics below are not operational: Waterfall, Amanzimtoti, Wyebank, Mpola, New Germany, Nazareth Township centre, Seacowlake, Bester, Redcliffe, Umlazi G, Umlazi AA, Umlazi N. Verulam and Waterloo clinics are only attending to emergencies only due to the shortage of staff who can’t get to work. All mobile clinics are not currently operating.

The Municipality will continue to reassess the situation and advise the public of further developments.
