Municipality Donates Red Duikers to Umdoni Park

The eThekwini Municipality has resolved to donate surplus animals to neighbouring nature reserves, this is due to Pigeon Valley Nature Reserves reaching its official animal carrying capacity and to prevent animals from being forced out of the nature reserves. This decision will see Umdoni Park being the first beneficiary of 6 Red Duikers.

An animal Survey conducted in 2017 found that the population count has grown up to 50+ while the official carrying capacity of Pigeon Valley Nature Reserve is +/- 30 species at the time.

On Tuesday, 18 June 2019, the Municipality will conduct first of its kind animal capture operation of 06 Red Duikers at Pigeon valley Nature Reserve from 7 am and the operation is expected to be completed around 11 am thereafter they will be transported to Umdoni Park for release.

The operation will be conducted by the competent game capture team and members of the media are invited to come and cover this first of its kind operation.
