MAYOR XABA FORGES STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS WITH GLOBAL MAYORS TO DRIVE SERVICE DELIVERY
EThekwini Municipality is set to strengthen ties with cities worldwide to expedite service delivery. This commitment was made by EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, at the Kerala Urban Conclave, in India over the weekend. Addressing the gathering, which included mayors, ministers, urban planners, academics, business leaders, and civil society representatives, Mayor Xaba called for enhanced urban planning to accelerate service delivery and foster liveable conditions for vulnerable communities. He highlighted rapid urbanisation and recurring disasters as one of the issues that must top the agenda of cities. Rapid urbanisation, Mayor Xaba noted, has driven migration to urban areas, often leading to settlements in undeveloped zones that increase disaster vulnerability.
"Cities must therefore reassess their approach to informal settlements and work towards creating habitable environments," he said.
Mayor Xaba emphasised the value of knowledge sharing on overcoming service delivery hurdles, pointing out significant technological advancements in some developing cities.
"By learning from each other, we can harness technology to boost quality service delivery and improve the ease of doing business," he stated.
Mayor Xaba discussed technological innovations with fellow mayors for enhancing water, sanitation, and waste management services. He also visited a local landfill site to examine the city's industrial waste treatment, recycling, and disposal practices.
