Mayor Visits Baby Rescued from Storm Water Drain
EThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede together with other councillors today, 13 February 2019, visited the little girl who was rescued from a storm water drain at Newlands East on Monday, 11 February.
Mayor Gumede expressed satisfaction with the progress of the infant's recovery. "I would like to sincerely thank the community of Ward 11 and Emergency Services personnel who were involved in the rescue as well as the hospital staff who are nursing this beautiful little girl back to health." She urged women who find themselves in a predicament of having an unwanted pregnancy to go to places of safety where they can leave their children to be taken care of." As the Municipality we will embark on an education campaign to create awareness about the available places of safety within Durban so that cases of this nature can be eliminated. There is help but people need to be made aware of the avenues to follow."
The parents of the baby have not been located. She is currently under high intensive care at the Addington Hospital.
Today being International Condom Day, Mayor Gumede also urged all citizens who are sexually active, particularly the youth, to always practice safe sex. "Using condoms not only helps to prevent unwanted pregnancies but also protects us from contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Today we re-emphasize the importance of condom use and other contraception methods in preventing unwanted pregnancies and staying safe and healthy. Once a woman is ready to have a child and falls pregnant, it is also important that they visit their nearest clinic and do all necessary check-up so that we give birth to happy and healthy babies."
