FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mayor Kaunda To Assess Progressive Cato Ridge Poultry Farm and Youth Nursery in Umzinyathi

As part of government efforts to fight the scourge of job losses and unemployment, eThekwini Municipality is leading projects in various parts of the City to create opportunities within the agriculture and associated industries.

Following the retrenchment of workers after the closure of Rainbow Chicken poultry farms in the City, the Municipality together with the Provincial Government and other stakeholders intervened to assist affected workers with their livelihood. The Isukile Agricultural Cooperative, formed by the retrenched employees, began operating in December 2020 and have already started selling their poultry products.

EThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda will, on Tuesday 06 April, visit the Cato Ridge Chicken Farm near Hammersdale to assess progress of the project and its future potential growth. During the visit Mayor Kaunda will outline the Municipality’s bigger plans for the farm that will further create employment through a site that will be upgraded into an Agri-Park Incubator.

Mayor Kaunda will also visit a youth owned cooperative, Ilangabi Elingacishi, in Umzinyathi which started its full operation in March 2020, producing seedlings and vegetables.

The Municipality has invested a total of R17,7 million on the two sites.

Members of the media are cordially invited to join Mayor Kaunda on the site visits.
