Mayor Kaunda Saddened by Deputy Minister Hlongwa’s Untimely Death
EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda has conveyed his deepest condolences to the family of Bavelile Hlongwa, the Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources who passed away last night in a vehicle crash.
The crash occurred along the N1 at Maubane Bridge in Hammanskraal near Pretoria.
Kaunda who expressed shock at the untimely death of Hlongwa described her as “the finest product of our revolution.”
Hlongwa was born in Umzinto in KwaZulu-Natal and graduated with a BSC in Chemical Engineering. She became involved in student politics and served in various structures of the ANC Youth League. In 2019 she was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources.
“We are deeply saddened by this great loss and the people of South Africa have been robbed of this exceptional leader. We were still expecting her to play an instrumental role in growing and transforming our economy to address the challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality,” said Kaunda.
