Mayor Kaunda Described Makhubo As Champion for Climate Change and Sustainable Development
EThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda described the late Mayor of Johannesburg, Goeff Makhubo as a visionary who was committed to the development of the people of Johannesburg.
Mayor Makhubo passed away today, 9 July in hospital after battling Covid-19.
Mayor Kaunda conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the Makhubo family and wished them strength during this difficult time of bereavement.
Apart from being the Mayor of Johannesburg, Mayor Makhubo was the ANC Chairperson of the Greater Johannesburg Region. He rose through the ranks of the movement and cut his political teeth in the student movement and the ANC Youth League.
As the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Mayor Makhubo worked with Mayor Kaunda to champion climate change initiatives in both cities. Before his untimely death, Mayor Makhubo oversaw the development and launch of the Climate Action Plan for the City of Johannesburg to reduce carbon emissions.
Mayor Kaunda said as Co-Chairperson of C40 Africa Region, they have lost a dependable ally in the fight against climate change.
“We must find strength in the fact that he left a legacy we are proud of as the Network of Cities for Climate Change, particularly in Africa,” said Mayor Kaunda.
“In his honour, we must continue to observe the Covid-19 protocols so that we can flatten the curve.”
