Mayor Kaunda Congratulates DJ Black Coffee on His Grammy Award Win

ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

4 APRIL 2022

EThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda has joined millions of South Africans in congratulating DJ Black Coffee for winning his first Grammy at the 64th Annual Recording Academy Awards on 3 April.

Nathi Maphumulo, popularly known as DJ Black Coffee, attended the awards show with his son Esona. He took home the award for the best dance/electronic album for his 12-track album Subconsciously. He is the first South African producer to be nominated and win the award.

Mayor Kaunda said eThekwini celebrates the success of DJ Black Coffee.

“His win is our win as the City of Durban. We have an existing tourism initiative partnership with him which saw DJ Black Coffee record a vignette at various tourist sites to promote the city as a premier tourist attraction.”

Currently, the vignette is playing on MTV, DStv channel 322 and BET Africa, DStv channel 129.

“With this Grammy win, I am certain that he will further promote eThekwini across the globe. We are proud of his achievement and to have partnered with him to promote the city,” said Mayor Kaunda.

Meanwhile, plans to promote Durban as a destination of choice are well underway in preparation for the Easter holidays. The interprovincial tour that took place this past weekend saw Durban Tourism host senior tour operators from Mpumalanga, the Western Cape, and Gauteng. The delegation explored the City’s hidden gems with meetings facilitated to stimulate trade exchange and tourism recovery.

The destination promotion campaign is set to continue this weekend in other parts of KwaZulu-Natal. The intra-provincial destination promotion will take place at Pietermaritzburg’s Liberty Midlands Mall on 8 April, Meerensee Mall in Richards Bay on 9 April, and at Shelly Beach in Margate on 10 April. These will target local tourists to encourage them to visit eThekwini.
