Mayor Gumede Calls for Calm at Newlands East
Mayor Zandile Gumede has expressed her heartfelt condolences to the families of three girls from Newlands East who died this morning after being hit by a taxi.
Mayor Gumede has also called for calm in the area after angry community members barricaded Dumisani Makhaye Road demanding that speed humps be installed. “I would like to convey my condolences to the families who have lost their children due to this tragic accident. I am optimistic that our law enforcement officers will do everything possible to bring the perpetrator of this horrendous act to book. I will take upon myself that the process of installing speed humps in the area is expedited.” said Gumede
Mayor Gumede also urged motorists to be ultra-cautious at all times and obey the rules of the road in order to ensure safety for all road-users.
“Most of the accidents are as result of motorists being reckless. We have got incidents where some drive with speed endangering the lives of other road users. We have on numerous occasions as leaders called for motorists to drive safely but some decide not to listen” said Gumede.
Reports indicate that four girls were walking to school when they were hit by a mini bus taxi that allegedly drove through a red robot.
Three of the girls died on the scene while the fourth one is in a critical condition in nearby state in hospital.
