Mayor Calls for Calm in Universities
EThekwini Mayor Councillor Zandile Gumede wishes to convey her condolences to the family of a student who was shot dead yesterday during the protest at the Durban University of Technology.
“We wish the family strength during this difficult time. I also wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured and hospitalised during the impulse,” said a saddened Mayor Gumede.
Gumede said that she has requested the eThekwini Municipality desk to lead the intervention process which will ensure an amicable situation for teaching, learning, research and community engagement. In 2017, a group of religious leaders marched side by side with multitudes of students to hand in a Memorandum to government at the Durban City Hall which led to the country adopting “a free quality higher education” policy.
“I welcome the intervention led by Acting Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Sihle Zikalala and we are certain that it will bear fruit,” she added. Durban is home to numerous institutions of higher learning both public and private.
