MASSIVE FIRE DISPLACES OVER 200 IN KENNEDY ROAD INFORMAL SETTLEMENT
EThekwini Municipality’s Fire and Emergency Services together with the Disaster Management teams swiftly responded to a large scale fire that broke out at 2pm yesterday at the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement in Ward 25.
The blaze tore through the settlement, destroying 117 informal structures and displacing 217 people, including children.
No injuries or fatalities have been reported. The cause of the fire remains unknown and is currently under investigation.
Onsite humanitarian assistance is being provided by the Municipality’s Disaster Management Unit, in partnership with the Non Profit Organisation – the Gift of the Givers, who are working tirelessly to support affected residents with emergency relief, including food, blankets, and other essentials.
Displaced families have found temporary refuge with neighbours, friends, and relatives.
Meanwhile, the Municipality’s Human Settlements Division is actively working on a solution to assist those who have lost their homes.
