Learners Rewarded for Their Creativity on Road Safety Education
ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 4 JUNE 2022
The eThekwini Transport Authority, in partnership with the South African Road Federation (SARF) and the Department of Education, celebrated learners and schools during the finale of the Road Safety Poetry and Speech Schools Competition on 3 June.
Learners were required to submit a one-page essay or poem on road safety concerns around their respective schools. They also had to outline the interventions the school has undertaken to address them. This included, but was not limited to, assembly presentations on safety, stakeholder visits, classroom teaching, and awareness campaigns.
Twenty-two schools were in the finals with all the learners receiving certificates of participation during the ceremony. The competition was divided into three categories namely, for grades 2 to 3, grades 4 to 7 and for learners with special needs.
For each category the school received a prize of R4 000, while the first prize learner received R 3000, second place received R2 000 and R1 000 for the third-place winner.

Category Three: First Prize: Aphiwe Mabhida - Khulangolwazi Special School Second Prize: Fezile Chiliza - Mason Lincoln Special School Third Prize: Khanyisile Dube - Truro Prevocational School
The Road Safety Poetry and Speech Schools Programme aims to support the national curriculum statement on road safety education and delivery in schools.
Furthermore, it hopes to promote good road safety among learners and to raise public awareness of road safety among primary school learners.
