Following years of ravaging fires that have robbed families of homes, safety, and loved ones, a new spirit of resilience is burning bright in Kennedy Road Informal Settlement in ward 25.

Once gripped by relentless fires that tore through homes and lives, this informal settlement is now turning fear into preparedness. To protect vulnerable communities and build lasting resilience, eThekwini Municipality’s Disaster Management  Directorate, in partnership with Fire Services and the KZN Provincial Disaster Management Centre, trained 100 residents from the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement in fire safety and disaster risk reduction. This initiative formed part of the commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, observed annually on 13 October, under the theme ‘Fund Resilience, Not Disasters'. Kennedy Road has long been plagued by frequent fire outbreaks, often resulting in displacement, destruction, and loss of life. This initiative marks a turning point in empowering residents to become first responders in their own homes and communities. Participants received hands-on training in fire prevention, safe use of household items, emergency response, and evacuation procedures. They learned how to extinguish small fires, assist others during emergencies, and prevent the spread of fires before help arrives.

Acting Chief Training Officer in the Fire Services Directorate, Confidence Gumede, said:

“Kennedy Road is one of the informal settlements most affected by fire incidents. This training is vital in ensuring residents are equipped with the knowledge and skills to prevent fires, remain calm, and respond effectively during emergencies,” she said. The training session also aimed to inspire long-term behaviour change and foster a culture of preparedness. By building collective knowledge and coordination, the Municipality is helping communities take ownership of their safety and reduce the impact of disasters. The initiative was further strengthened by the support of SANTAM and GIASA, who partnered with the Municipality to promote safer living environments and build community resilience.

Kennedy Road resident,Thobile Cele, thanked the Municipality and partners for a life-changing training, saying that lack of knowledge has been a major contributor to fire and disaster incidents. “Now that we are empowered, we can protect ourselves, our families, and our neighbours, strengthening the community’s overall safety, preparedness, and resiliency,” she said. The training is an ongoing city-wide collaboration to protect lives, infrastructure, and livelihoods, while reducing long-term economic impacts.
