Governance and Human Resources Committee Recommendations
EThekwini Municipality’s Governance and Human Resources Committee, chaired by Councillor Mpume Sithole held its monthly meeting on 16 October, at the Durban City Hall. The following items were supported and recommended to the Executive Committee for approval (includes but not limited to);
NEW STREET NAMES IN WARD 28 COVERING THE DENIS HURLEY CENTRE
The Chairperson of the Government and Human Resources Committee Councillor Mpume Sithole said the street naming process should be followed to ensure that the names are understood by residents living around the area in question.
“The street naming project will give communities a sense of belonging. We want to ensure all our people have streets with names to allow for easy identification of the street and properties and assist in efficient service delivery and assist in speedy response to emergency needs of the community,” said Councillor Sithole.
She said the Municipality adopted the rationalization of street address policy to ensure that all streets and buildings have names. Councillor Sithole expressed her satisfaction that the naming was conducted fairly and in line with the provision of the Municipality’s street naming and addressing policy.
“The ward councillor is responsible for leading the process which should be conducted fairly to eliminate unnecessary objections which could delay the implementation of the process. The community is responsible for proposing and submitting names to the ward councillor,” said Councillor Sithole.
GRANT IN AID CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP
The Committee approved the roll out of the Grant In Aid Programme for the 2019/2020 financial year to equip organisations with community development objectives. Chairperson of the Committee Councillor Mpume Sithole said these organisations must be willing to improve the standard of living and eradicating poverty in the communities they operate in.
Councillor Sithole said there are workshops that have been arranged, starting from 19 October until 24 November. “The workshops seek to impart knowledge and skills to organisations so that they are capacitated to access the grant in aid programme,” she said.
