Excitement Is Mounting Ahead Of Articulate Africa Book and Art Fair
Excitement is mounting ahead of the much anticipated Articulate Africa Book and Art Fair which takes place at the Durban Exhibition Centre between Thursday, 11 April and Saturday, 13 April 2019.
The biggest Book and Art Fair in the continent promises to be a feast for artists, gastronomists and book worms but not in the way that you will expect when the Fair showcases the best of over 300 Africa’s talent in the art, gastronomy and literature with over 40 seminars.
‘Idlozi’ in Art production: will be a conversation about the impact of the spiritual in creative activity. This will be one of the 40 thought-provoking seminars that will be held throughout the Fair. In this seminar, panellists will share how they find a balance between their spirituality, religion and the academic environment.
The panellist will explain in-depth the roles played by the body and the mind in relation to the ‘creative spirit’ and whether all artists experience this transcendental phenomenon? Members of the panel will include Nkosinathi Khanyile, a Durban University of Technology lecturer who is also a practising diviner, Langa Magwa, a Rastafarian visual artist and an award winning Jazz maestro Mbuso Khoza.
Things get more exciting as the other seminar taps into a conversation about the 4th industrial revolution, also on Thursday, 11 April 2019. This will be a debate around the positive and negative impact of social media and guiding people from falling foul of the law.
In the panel will be Dr David Molapo of I CAN Foundation, Social Media Legal Expect Verlie Oosthuizen, the author of Everyday Zulu: There is um’Zulu in all of us Melusi Tshabalala, Vega (Digital Design School), Social Clarity (Social Media Training) and Epicdev (App Developers).
Thereafter, the focus will shift to the Narrative panel discussion which will target experts from the legal, political, media, entertainment and academic sector. ANC NEC Member Malusi Gigaba, UKZN Lecturer Dr Nompumelelo Thabethe, Attorney and Partner at Shepstone & Wylie Sifiso Msomi, Actor/Producer Mandla N and Political analyst Dumisani Hlophe will explore which narratives interest the South African audience. While unpacking the development of these narratives, they will probe what the audience base their interest on and what narratives do they buy into?
The Land is Ours Seminar, is also expected to draw the attention of many people and the debate to be heated as the Leader of Black First Land First Andile Mngxithama, African National Congress National Executive Committee member Senzo Mchunu, Farmer Ayanda Zulu and Professor Bheki Mngomezulu will place a perspective of the land question by drawing on the personal accounts of a young farmer who lives off the land. Discussions will then move to a national mode of analysis, specifically defining what is meant by the land question. Thereafter, the efficacy of previous government policy, programs and mechanism to bring about redress will be unpacked and relevance of the land question to the South African economy to be addressed.
The Women at the Helm seminar will see Gender Activist Cheryl Zondi, Silungile Mavundla and Vannessa Govender author of “Beaten but not Broken” dissects the sexual violence in church, family members shielding rapists and sexual violence in the workplace.
Under the theme Blessers Friends or Foes? Khanyi Mbau and author of I Tweet What I Like Jackie Phamotse will discuss the reality of being a blesee which may be quite different to initial expectations of what this experience entails.
The discussion will be based on characters in their books “Bitch, Please! I’m Khanyi Mbau” and “Bare
The award winning journalist turned author Iman Rappetti and Malebo Shephedi lead a seminar titled “Controlling your Destiny or Someone else will” The seminar will center on Iman’s compelling memoir, Becoming Iman, it will tackle the importance of being in control of your own life as it takes courage to stand up to those who want you to be obedient and tow the line according to their expectations.
Thereafter, Chris Steyn (The Lost Boys of Bird Island), Terry Bell (Unfinished Business - South Africa, Apartheid, and the truth), and Mojalefa Dipholo (The other side of freedom) will delve into atrocities committed pre-1994. Their seminar seeks to uncover the hidden histories in the Apartheid era and the lasting wounds that they have inflicted
Also at the Fair, the study of the relationship between food and culture will also take centre stage in the Gastronomy section (Food Fair). A number of South Africa’s renowned Chefs will take turn in transforming the Fair into a gastronomic heaven with their flair of preparing different kinds of food. Some of the renowned Chefs that people can look forward to, includes the Chilli Chocolate Chefs Zainab and Faatimah Paruk, Lucia Mthiyane and the Executive Chef at the Durban ICC, John Moatshe.
