EThekwini Municipality to Launch Multimillion Sheep Breeding Project

ETHEKWINI MEDIA INVITE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
12 July 202
2

City’s Business Support, Markets, Tourism and AgriBusiness Unit is moving with speed to absorb unemployed youth into Agribusiness sector. Thanks to the AgriBusiness Masterplan adopted by City Council in 2020 to support and unlock opportunities for local AgriSMME’s in the vegetables, sheep, poultry, cannabis and piggery commodities. This initiative resulted in youth cooperatives taking over former Rainbow chicken farms in Cato Ridge.

To diversify the sector, on Thursday 14 July, the Municipality will host an Intensive Sheep Field Day where the sheep breeding project will be launched.

The aim is to showcase the progress made in the development of intensive sheep business as an approved commodity as well as to engage with stakeholders on possibilities to partner and grow the scale of sheep production in eThekwini. The short term goal is to grow local herd of sheep to unlock demand for reopening or building of new abattoirs.
