ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY GEARS UP FOR 2025 COMRADES MARATHON
With just a few days to go before the 98th Comrades Marathon kicks off; the eThekwini Municipality is in full swing preparing for one of the biggest sporting events on the South African calendar.
Scheduled for Sunday, 8 June 2025, the down-run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban is expected to draw tens of thousands of runners, spectators, and visitors to the city.
As runners prepare for the “Ultimate Human Race,” the municipality is working diligently to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across the entire race route.
The city has activated a comprehensive operational plan to ensure a spotless and welcoming environment for the ultra-marathon.
The plan is part of a broader city beautification and readiness programme coordinated across multiple departments to ensure that Durban is on top form for runners.
Cleansing and Solid Waste unit will be cleaning the eThekwini boundary from Cato Ridge to the Moses Mabhida Stadium People’s Park ensuring that all waste is collected, and the route remains litter-free after the race.
In addition, waste receptacles will be strategically placed along the route to encourage responsible disposal from the spectators.
The municipality also request residents to support the marathon by keeping their surroundings clean, cheering for runners, and showing the warmth and hospitality Durban is known for.
