ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY CHAMPIONS WOMEN IN SECURITY MANAGEMENT
In a groundbreaking effort to promote gender equality within the security sector, eThekwini Municipality has launched a pioneering Security Management Training Programme designed to empower young women and reshape the future of Municipal security.
A total of 80 trainees were selected, with 60 percent being women - a significant milestone in a field long dominated by men.
The programme, which officially began in January, recently concluded its first phase on 14 September, marking a major achievement for the trainees who have now successfully completed this stage and are set to commence with phase two of the programme.
Accredited by the Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority (SASSETA), the training covers security practices from NQF Level 1 to 5, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for professional roles within industry.
Trainees will be deployed across various urban zones to tackle real-world challenges such as crime hotspots, urban grime, and dilapidated infrastructure.
This hands-on experience will not only sharpen their operational skills, but also foster a sense of civic duty and pride.
The Municipality regards this initiative as a strategic investment. By nurturing young talent, especially women, it is building a sustainable pipeline of skilled security professionals ready to fill permanent positions as vacancies arise.
This approach ensures continuity, diversity, and long-term resilience in Municipal security operations.
Participants have expressed gratitude and optimism about their futures. Speaking during the first phase of the programme, Anele Phungula, 22, from Malvern was happy to be part of the programme.
“I look forward to helping the Municipality fight crime, protect residents, and maintain law and order, especially in the central business district,” said Phungula.
Lungelo Kubone, 22, from Chatsworth, added that this opportunity will be life-changing.
“I am passionate about security and law and order. Through the programme, I am gaining skills that will help me with my career,” said Kubone.
With phase one now complete, the programme advances to phase, which will run until November and focus on workplace-based training.
Nqobile Phewa, Senior Manager of Security Management Alternative Operations in the Security Management Services Directorate, commended the trainees.
“We are proud of these young men and women, especially the remarkable number of women who are breaking barriers in the security sector. They are proof that when we invest in the youth, we are investing in a safer, stronger, and more inclusive City for all,” said Phewa.
