ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY AWARDS GRANT-IN-AID FUNDING TO 111 NPOS IN 2024/25 FINANCIAL YEAR
In a significant boost to community development efforts, eThekwini Municipality held a handover ceremony to officially award funding to successful non-profit organisations (NPOs) under the Sundry Grant-in-Aid programme for the 2024/25 financial year.
The event was led by the Chairperson of the Governance and Human Capital Committee, Councillor Nkosenhle Madlala, accompanied by the Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Ntando Khuzwayo. It took place at the Amanzimtoti Civic Centre today, 14 May 2025.
Of the 580 applications received, only 111 organisations were successful in securing the grant, underscoring the rigorous selection process and the high demand for support among community-based initiatives.
Councillor Madlala praised the work of the successful NPOs, saying that the organisations represented at the handover are the “soul of our community.”
“You are the bridge between need and hope in communities. To fight poverty and unemployment, we need strong and capable NPOs to achieve this purpose. The timing of the programme was significant, coinciding with the latest report from Statistics South Africa, which revealed a rise in the national unemployment rate. This reaffirmation tells us that the Grant-in-Aid programme is a step in the right direction,” said Councillor Madlala.
He added that the Grant-in-Aid programme serves as a vital lifeline for NPOs working across various sectors, including education, health, youth development and social welfare.
The Municipality provides financial resources to strengthen their capacity and expand their impact within communities,” added Councillor Madlala.
Councillor Khuzwayo reiterated the Municipality’s expectations of accountability and transparency in the use of the funds by the NPOs.
“We trust that this support will be used to implement the projects you proposed. We will be monitoring progress to ensure that the intended beneficiaries see the results,” he said.
The event also facilitated engagement among various organisations, fostering a spirit of collaboration and shared purpose in tackling some of the City’s most pressing socio-economic challenges.
Among the 111 recipients, were several standout organisations making a tangible impact on the ground including:
The Portia Ncwane Foundation - An arts and culture organisation committed to preserving heritage through artist empowerment workshops and community projects. With a footprint that extends across South Africa and the continent, the foundation champions cultural sustainability.
Gezephi Sibisi Foundation - Focused on youth development, this foundation equips young people with skills in the performing arts, handcrafts and behavioural change initiatives, promoting both creativity and personal growth.
Glorifying Christ Foundation - Provides essential services, including a soup kitchen, uniform donations for learners, support for senior citizens and disaster relief for flood victims.
Savanna Park Senior Citizens Club - Dedicated to the wellbeing of elderly residents through activities such as sewing, writing, meditation, and exercise thereby fostering mental and physical wellness in later life.
With these grants, eThekwini Municipality remains committed to supporting grassroot organisations that are instrumental in driving inclusive growth, social cohesion and sustainable development throughout the City.
