FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY WELCOMES ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR KEY INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
EThekwini Municipality welcomes National Treasury’s decision announced by the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, to grant additional funding to the City for the implementation of the Integrated Transport Network Plan (Go!Durban) and the Trading Services reforms.
In welcoming the funding, eThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba said the grants will significantly enhance infrastructure and improve service delivery across the Municipality.
The allocation of over R400 million for Trading Services will accelerate the implementation of the turnaround strategies for Water and Sanitation, Energy Management, and Waste Management.
These three turnaround strategies have been formally adopted by Council and approved by National Treasury.
This grant demonstrates that the City’s efforts to improve the performance of these critical services are being recognised and supported by national government.
The Municipality wishes to assure residents that these funds will be used effectively to improve water supply, reduce water losses, and upgrade water and sanitation infrastructure.
In addition, the funding will strengthen waste management systems to ensure and maintain a clean City and support initiatives that ensure energy security, a key driver of economic growth and job creation.
The R303 million rollover in the Public Transport Network Grant will enable the Municipality to continue the vital work of operationalising Corridor 3 of our Integrated Public Transport Network (Go!Durban).
The Municipality acknowledges that the project has taken longer than anticipated, delaying the provision of reliable public transport for the people of eThekwini.
The City is pleased to report that negotiations with the affected taxi operators along the route have resumed.
Furthermore, the City is optimistic that the new proposals currently under discussion will be accepted, paving the way for this important service to become operational soon.
