EThekwini Municipality Looking to Procure Power from Independent Producers

MEDIA STATEMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

19 July 2021

All potential private developers, investors and experienced energy infrastructure organisations are being invited by eThekwini Municipality to
submit information for the possible procurement of power.

The Request for Information (RFI) will be open until 10 September 2021 at 4PM.

The Municipality is looking to procure 400MW from diverse mix of sustainable, dispatchable and reliable power generation technologies.

This is part of the City’s newly adopted eThekwini Energy Policy and is in line with the City’s Climate Action Plan (CAP), which was the first of its kind to be adopted in Africa in September last year.

Long term goals of the CAP include having 100% of energy being supplied by renewable energy in 2050.

The Energy Policy aims to create a resilient, integrated Municipal energy system with a diversified energy mix to provide low-cost, reliable energy for residents and businesses over the next 30 years.

EThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda said the changing energy landscape in South Africa requires eThekwini Municipality to adequately implement aggressive energy reforms.

“The main objectives are to mitigate the impacts of load shedding on the local economy, create sustainable jobs across the entire energy value chain and lower the prices of electricity for our residential, commercial and industrial customers,” said Mayor Kaunda.

Gazetted amendments to the Electricity Regulations on New Generation Capacity (2011) of Electricity Regulation Act (No 4 of 2006) authorise municipalities to procure new generation capacity in accordance with the Integrated Resource Plan.

Interested parties are requested to submit their RFI before the stipulated deadline, free of charge.
