EThekwini Municipality Kicks Off Heritage Month Celebrations

The eThekwini Municipality will on Tuesday, 10 September kick off the Heritage Month celebrations with the 7th PRC Month Programme that encompasses a variety of activities that emphasises the importance of traditions and cultures, and brings the communities together, whilst ensuring social cohesion and building cohesive communities.

The celebrations will kick off with a Public Art in Public Spaces Seminar that is aimed at dealing with the role of art in public spaces and will also provide an opportunity to constructively articulate and address social issues and injustices, norms and conventions through the medium of public art.

On Wednesday, the focus will shift to Urban Conversation and Animal Management as the Municipality has recently proclaimed 10 nature reserves which are expected to help contribute towards securing the City’s biodiversity in compliance with the National Protected Areas Act. The Municipality has begun with the work of fencing all of the proclaimed Municipal Nature Reserves to help protect against land invasions. Animals such as impala and zebra will be introduced to restore the natural environment of these reserves and help ensure proper grassland management.

Urban Forestry will also take centre stage as researchers and captains of the industry will gather at Westville Civic Centre to deliberate and to find solutions to challenges facing the City’s urban forests. They will also use this seminar to raise the profile of the urban forest and its vital importance to the future development of our cities.

The Head of Park, Recreation and Culture Unit Thembinkosi Ngcobo said that there was something for everyone as the programmes were chosen such that they cater for the City’s diverse cultures.

One such event was the Durban Beach Sari Stroll.

“Over the weekend, we are expecting over 3000 women from across racial groups to gather on the Beachfront for 10th Durban Beach Sari Stroll which is aimed at celebrating the beauty of Sari that has remained unchanged over the centuries while emphasising social cohesion, identifying the various issues that affect women in today’s society,” said Ngcobo.
