EThekwini Mayor Wishes Residents A Happy International Day of Yoga
EThekwini Municipality Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda wishes all the city’s residents a Happy International Yoga Day.
In light of the Covid-19 global pandemic, Mayor Kaunda has encouraged residents to practice yoga in their homes in commemoration of this important day.
“As we celebrate the International Day of Yoga, I would like to encourage you to practice it in the comfort of your homes so that we continue to observe the current COVID-19 regulations. This will also ensure that while we commemorate this important day which aims to foster a healthy lifestyle, we also flatten the curve of the global pandemic,” he said.
As a caring government, eThekwini encourages a healthy lifestyle for the wellbeing of the citizens. Yoga is known as an invaluable gift of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature and a holistic approach to health and well-being.
“We particularly encourage practicing yoga as it is not just exercise, but it also helps to discover the sense of oneness with ourselves, the world and nature. It also helps to instill spiritual discipline,” added Kaunda.
Yoga has an array of health benefits. The practice has the ability to improve flexibility, build muscle strength, perfects your posture, prevents cartilage and joint breakdown, protects your spine, improves bone health, increases blood flow, boosts immunity, increases heart rate and decreases blood pressure.
“EThekwini Municipality supports this form of healthy lifestyle and well-being because our City is a melting pot of culture and we embrace diversity. In eThekwini, we of the view that embracing and celebrating International Day of Yoga will promote social cohesion, co-existence and integration, peace, harmony and ignite the spirit of Ubuntu,” Kaunda elaborated.
