FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EThekwini Embarks On Farmers Roadshows

In its quest to aggressively advance the agenda of Radical Economic Transformation (RET), eThekwini Municipality has kick started roadshows aimed at skilling emerging farmers.

The intention is to ensure that emerging farmers participate in the mainstream economy and that barriers they usually face in the agricultural sector are removed.

Mayor Zandile Gumede said roadshows aim to create awareness about agricultural sector and programmes available to assist our emerging farmers especially those from disadvantaged communities.

“Our main purpose is to equip them with information and impart technical skills that will help them to create market opportunities for
them and reduce dependency on state support. We want our emerging farmers to also have skills in agri-processing as opposed to selling their products raw as they are. This  we believe is going to enable them to rake in considerable revenue,” said Gumede.

She added that roadshows are a platform to address barriers in the food value chain and fast-track the economic inclusion of the majority of the black farmers in the agricultural sector.

Members of the media, emerging and aspiring farmers from all the regions of eThekwini are invited to attend farmers roadshow scheduled as follows:

DATE : 23 February 2019
VENUE : Pinetown Civic Centre (Council Chamber)
TIME : 09h00
