Durban shines bright: a historic rugby championship and long weekend of unmatched socio-economic success

DURBAN SHINES BRIGHT: A HISTORIC RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP AND LONG WEEKEND OF UNMATCHED SOCIO-ECONOMIC SUCCESS

Durban hosted an electrifying Rugby Championship match, where South Africa delivered a commanding 67-30 victory over Argentina at the Kings Park Stadium. 

The event drew an attendance of 45 158 fans, out of a capacity of 46 500, creating an exhilarating atmosphere that showcased Durban’s world-class sporting facilities.

The direct economic impact from this single event was an impressive R183.6 million, contributing significantly to the City’s GDP, which stood at R454.3 million. The match and associated activities generated employment for 820 individuals and contributed an estimated R33.8 million in tax revenue. Hoteliers reported an extraordinary 90 percent occupancy rate during the event, highlighting the City’s ability to attract and accommodate large crowds seamlessly.

LONG WEEKEND SOCIO-ECONOMIC BOOM (25 TO 28 SEPTEMBER 2025)

The excitement extended throughout the long weekend, attracting a total of 123 266 visitors, of which 73 959 were overnight guests and 49 306 day-trippers. The cumulative economic impact during this period was staggering, with direct contributions reaching R695.4 million. Visitors spent R653.2 million on overnight accommodations and R42.2 million on day activities, further bolstering Durban’s economy.  

On Saturday, 27 September, the City also celebrated World Tourism Day, providing the public with an immersive experience through guided tours along Durban’s iconic heritage routes via the Ricksha bus, along with vibrant activities at Westown Square, High Stakes, and the Shongweni Farmers Market. These initiatives showcased Durban’s rich cultural tapestry and adventure tourism offerings, reinforcing its status as a premier destination.

EThekwini Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, emphasised the significance of these events, stating: 

“Durban’s ability to host world-class sporting events demonstrates our commitment to economic growth and community engagement. The City continues to shine as a beacon of tourism, sport, and cultural diversity, welcoming visitors from all over the world with warmth and pride.”

The long weekend’s activities contributed to a total GDP boost of R1.7 billion and created approximately 12 500 jobs, underscoring Durban’s position as a premier sports tourism destination.

The City’s hospitality sector experienced a remarkable surge, with several key properties reaching full capacity. Hotels such as the Oyster Box, Southern Sun properties in both Central and Umhlanga, Radisson Blu, Aha Gateway, Umhlanga Apart Hotel, and Suncoast Hotels reported occupancy rates ranging from 97% to 100%.

Beyond the hotels, bustling areas like uMhlanga Village and Florida Road were alive with activity, with restaurants and pubs reaching full capacity. Zai Restaurant, in Morningside and Max’s Lifestyle, in uMlazi, reported high sales and busy venues, with many visitors coming from Limpopo and Gauteng. 

The weekend’s success not only showcased Durban’s sporting prowess, but also its vibrant cultural and entertainment scene, making it a truly unforgettable experience for locals and visitors alike.

The extraordinary occupancy rates and spending highlight the undeniable power of international sports events in Durban. These moments of global attention serve as catalysts for mobilising visitors and boosting local commerce, especially during peak holiday periods and school holidays.

Samantha Croft, Chairperson of the Durban Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee and Operations Director for Southern Sun KwaZulu-Natal, noted: 

“All Southern Sun properties in Durban were at full capacity during this weekend, exemplifying the City’s appeal and the economic ripple effect of hosting world-class rugby.”

Oyster Box Hotel Manager, Ashwin Jose, stated: 

"Occupancy was impacted positively, with us reaching 98% on Friday and 100% on Saturday. Overall, it was a very good weekend. With the Springboks winning, it made it even more special."

The City’s success as a host underscores its reputation as a top-tier international sports hub, capable of attracting thousands of visitors and generating significant economic benefits. Durban continues to shine as Africa’s sporting and tourism jewel, welcoming the world with open arms.
