Durban Ready To Host Vodacom Durban July Visitors
With glitz, glamour and a gold medal up for grabs, Durban is ready to host an unforgettable weekend as the 123rd Vodacom Durban July (VDJ) fever takes hold of the east coast.
As one of the most eagerly-awaited social events on the calendar and one of the busiest weekends in Durban, the VDJ brings thousands of visitors to the City.
This year, said Deputy City Manager for Economic Development and Planning Philip Sithole, 44 000 visitors are expected in the City, and with it, a major cash injection into the local economy.
“The total projected contribution to the City’s GDP is approximately R268 million, with 453 job opportunities created at the event,” he said.
At present, said Sithole, there is an 80 percent occupancy level at hotels in the greater Durban region.
“This hallmark event is the biggest horse racing event in Africa. The biggest source market that comes to the event is from Gauteng,” he said.
Visitors to the City, spend on average, four days in Durban, which contributes to the local GDP.
The Economic Development and Planning Department capitalises on the event and the high number of visitors to the City by planning activities in locations in and around Durban to showcase the City.
“As Durban Tourism we are hosting key international stakeholders from beyond South Africa to expose them to Durban,” he said.
Furthermore, activities in townships located around Durban and based on the main VDJ event, is projected to increase sales and create job opportunities.
“Thus, further job opportunities are created in communities, stimulating township businesses,” he said.
This year’s VDJ theme is “Stars of Africa” with the main race starting at 4:20pm. The winning horse and team takes home the grand R4,25 million prize.
Fashion is expected to take centre stage prior to the races with awards for best designers. Local and emerging designers who are part of the Durban Fashion Fair will also show off their creativity at the event.
