Communities Urged to Instill Family Values to Eradicate Gender-Based Violence

ETHEKWINI District Champion and MEC for Education, Kwazi Mshengu, and eThekwini Municipality Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, have urged communities to instill family values in boy children and teach them to respect human right to curb gender-based violence.

This clarion call was made today, 25 November 2020, at the unveiling of the 365 Days of Activism of Violence Against Women and Children Campaign which took place at Shala Zwane Sports Ground in KwaMashu M-Section.

The event kicked off by a walk in the township aimed at heightening awareness about the scourge. The Mayor and the MEC also visited families of gender-based violence victims.

“To ensure that this Campaign is alive throughout the year, we urge Councilllors to implement ward-based programmes that government has already developed,” said Mshengu.

Kaunda echoed Mshengu’s sentiments of the need for solid family structures that can resist all forms of social ills including gender-based violence. He added that government will accelerate women empowerment programmes to ensure that women do not rely on their partners for livelihood.
