FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City to Present Draft New Buildings Green Policy For Stakeholders’ Input
Strides towards achieving net zero carbon profiles in new developments within eThekwini Municipality are being taken by the City and to this end, a New Buildings Green Policy has been drafted.
The Municipality’s New Buildings Programme aims to encourage the development of buildings that improve the wellbeing of both people and environment.
EThekwini is recognised globally for its unrivalled initiatives aimed at aggressively reducing carbon emissions that are a recipe for climate change. In its quest to continue making a meaningful contribution to the world’s endeavor to reduce carbon footprint, the City is proud to introduce the draft policy for new buildings that will influence the future of climate action in the country’s third biggest city.
Energy use from buildings accounts for one third of the total greenhouse gas emissions in eThekwini and buildings typically have a life span of about 40 to over 100 years. If buildings are constructed to emit almost no carbon into the atmosphere, the future carbon savings will be significant.
A building with a net zero carbon profile can be defined as one that is highly energy-efficient, and the remaining energy use is from renewable energy, preferably on-site but also off-site where absolutely necessary, so that there are zero net carbon emissions on an annual basis.
The Municipality invites the public to join a webinar where the draft policy will be presented to external stakeholders to seek their input.
The aim of the consultation is to include the public in the implementation of the policy through allowing stakeholders to actively participate in providing feedback and input into the draft policy. Participants will get a chance to ask questions during the webinar.
For stakeholders without access to online facilities, physical presentations will be done in the Tongaat and Pinetown regions of eThekwini Municipality.
