City to Host Seminar Celebrating KwaMashu Township

EThekwini Municipality will celebrate the township of KwaMashu with a seminar on Thursday, 21 November that will focus on the area’s historical legacy while also paying homage to residents who played a significant role during the apartheid regime.

Members of the media are cordially invited to be part of this commemoration.

The seminar will include speakers who will share their testimonies and knowledge on the history of KwaMashu. The programme will also include the 60-year celebration of Isibonelo High School as the first high school built in the area.

The seminar will further highlight various historical sites and routes in KwaMashu in line with the National Liberation Heritage Route, an ongoing project of the South African National Heritage Council which is designed to develop and manage resources related to the legacy of the liberation struggle.

Commemorating the heritage of KwaMashu is an initiative of the Local History Museum in order to conserve and preserve local history.
The KwaMashu Township was established in 1959 and was the first township to emerge from the implementation of the Group Areas Act. It was formerly a sugar cane plantation owned by Sir Marshall Campbell whose name was translated into IsiZulu as “KwaMashu”.
