ETHEKWINI NEWS FLASH FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 28 February 2019 FULL COUNCIL DECISIONS City to Host Gcwalisa Imabhida Maskandi Concert The City will be supporting the Gcwalisa Imabhida Maskandi Concert which will be taking place on 30 March.
This follows the tabling of a report at a Full Council meeting held today, 28 February.
The multi-award winning music giant Khuzani Mpungose, affectionately known as Indlamlenze, will be staging the first of its kind Live Maskandi Concert at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. Mpungose will be the main act of this live Maskandi concert. The concert will also provide a platform and much needed exposure to a vast number of artists within the Masakandi music fraternity.
The tabled report states that the financial implications for the City will be R2.8 million which will cover the cost of stadium rental, pitch cover rental and installation, flood lights and fencing.
Head of Stadia Vusi Mazibuko, speaking at a special Executive Committee meeting held before Full Council where the report was initially tabled, said this concert was very “big” given the Masakandi following. He said there was provision made in the Community and Emergency Service Cluster for the development of artists.
Outlining reasons to support the event, the tabled report states that Plan six of the Integrated Development Plan states that festivals and events over time develop a sense of legacy and identity in the minds of people which is important when planning for social interaction within the built environment.
It further states that this event has the potential of being one of the City’s annual world-class signature events targeting all South Africans. It will also seek to introduce the international community to this beautiful piece of art.
