City reiterates its call to exercise caution when using fire after 250 shacks were razed to the ground by a raging inferno in Clare Estate
Emergency and fire personnel had their hands full in the early hours of the morning when fire ravaged several shacks in Clare Estate. The cause of the fire is not yet known and there are neither injuries nor fatalities that were reported.
In winter, when temperatures drop, the city’s informal human settlements are very susceptible to fires that usually leave a trail of damage and sometimes even claim lives.
Disaster management teams are in the area to offer much needed relief aid to the victims. NGOs working with the city to provide hot meals in the event of disasters, have been mobilised.
EThekwini, is appealing to residents to always use fire responsibly, to prevent calamities. Residents are urged to do the following:
Parents must ensure that children do not lay their hands on anything that may start a fire.
Smokers must desist from disposing off cigarette butts irresponsibly.
Fire must be exstinguished completely after using it.
Refrain from connecting electricity illegally.
Do not cook near materials that are likely to ignite fire such as curtains.
Ensure that cooking stoves are on a stable surface to prevent them from falling over.
Dwellings must be built a reasonable distance apart to prevent fire from spreading.
Candles must always be secured to prevent them from falling over and must be blown out before going to bed.
