City Implements Much Needed Relief Packages for Struggling Tenants Of Moses Mabhida Stadium
The Moses Mabhida stadium has reopened for meetings and conferences following the relaxation of lockdown regulations under level 2.
Level 2 has also ushered in stadium tours, helicopter flips, gyms with other stores opening their doors for business.
Head of Stadia and Facilities Unit management, Vusi Mazibuko said the stadium has prioritized the safety of tourists and guests with Covid-19 compliance protocols in place.
“Moses Mabhida Stadium is welcoming Durbanites back to the city’s favourite playground with COVID19 protocols in place to ensure safe fun for the whole family on the Golden Mile. Our compliant conference and meeting venues are also hosting functions for up to 50 people as per the national regulations. It is really good to see the stadium coming to life again as we and our clients adjust to the new normal and we look forward to the day we can welcome a capacity crowd back for a match or concert” said Mazibuko.
Following unprecedented financial distress experienced by the stadium tenants due to the lockdown regulations that previously banned social events, operation of tourism and hospitality industry, the eThekwini Municipality has resolved to offer Covid-19 rental rebate to the retail shops and corporate suits tenants of Moses Mabhida stadium. Thanks to the full Council for approving this relief. The approval was preceded by Covid-19 business recovery engagements that took place between Stadia and Facilities Unit management and its retail shop and its corporate suit tenants.
These tenants contribute to the stadium revenue generation through rental income. The relief measures include 100 percent waiver of monthly rental including interest accrued where lockdown was imposed but is limited to a maximum period of 6 months, April to September 2020.
Thereafter there’s a post lockdown package of a 10 % turnover monthly rental to replace the normal fixed monthly rental for retail shops for 6 months from the period of the re-opening post lockdown. Corporate Suit holders will be eligible for 60 % reduced monthly rental fee to replace the normal fixed monthly rental and charge on activation fee on bowl event days.
The package will be valid for 12 months from the date of re-opening post lockdown and thereafter normal fixed rental will apply. By following the Municipal Supply Chain Management regulations, the stadium will also extend all tenants leases by a further 12 months period to replace the months where tenants were unable to trade due to Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.
