City Honours Scholar Transport Drivers
To promote the safe transportation of school learners by scholar transport drivers, eThekwini Transport Authority will host a Safe to School, Safe to Home Scholar Transport Project Awards Ceremony on 14 June 2022.
The event will recognise and award scholar transport drivers, who consistently adhere to the rules of the road and driving safely when transporting learners.
The City partnered with Road Safety Partnership South Africa, Netstar, and Toyota South Africa Motors for this project.
The selection of drivers and training for this programme commenced in 2019. Approximately 150 drivers from the south and west regions were trained over the course of three years.
To monitor their driving, Netstar tracking devices were installed in 106 participating vehicles in July 2021. Monitoring was done over a three-month period in 2021 when learners were going to school on alternate days. Monitoring was also done for three months this year when learners were back at school fulltime.
The eight finalists all recorded no transgressions over the monitoring period despite them all driving more than 4 000 kilometres during the monitoring period.
Various cash prizes will be handed over to winners with the overall winner receiving a new Toyota Quantum.
