CITY’S EMERGENCY TEAMS RESPOND TO FIRE INCIDENT AT KENNEDY ROAD INFORMAL SETTLEMENT
The Municipality's Disaster Management teams, together with Fire and Emergency Services, worked tirelessly yesterday evening, 4 June to assist victims after a fire broke out in the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement in Ward 25.
The team responded to an urgent call at 7.30pm to attend to the blaze, which damaged a number of informal structures.
About 49 households were affected, with 47 structures totally destroyed while two were partially damaged.
This has left 76 people, including children, displaced.
No injuries or fatalities have been reported so far.
The displaced fire victims are currently being accommodated at a nearby community hall while the Municipality and other government departments are working on a long-term solution.
The cause of the fire is alleged to be illegal electricity connections.
Teams are currently on site investigating and assessing the impact of the damage.
