CITY’S EMERGENCY TEAMS REMAIN ON HIGH ALERT AMID CONTINUOUS DISRUPTIVE RAIN

EThekwini Municipality’s Disaster Management and Emergency teams remain on high alert following the current level 4 disruptive rainfall weather warning from the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

According to the weather service, there is disruptive rainfall with widespread showers and rainstorms, leading to localised flooding across KwaZulu-Natal, including eThekwini. This will continue until late into the afternoon.

To ensure public safety, residents are advised to exercise extra caution when driving, as multiple roads in and around Durban are waterlogged.

Motorists are also urged to follow traffic reports and use alternative routes where possible as several roads are severely waterlogged, including :

• Corner of North Coast Road and Braden Road
• M19 / Umngeni Road, under the N2 bridge
• M4 next to La Lucia

There is disruption of bus services on North Coast Road as a result of the road flooding. Several bus routes in the north are affected, including in KwaMashu F, J and K Sections.

Disaster management and emergency teams are activated and are prepared to help where needed.

So far, no incidents have been reported around the City.  However, teams will continue to monitor the situation.

Residents living in flood-prone areas, including informal settlements, are advised to take the necessary safety precautions.

For emergencies, contact the City’s Disaster Management Centre on 031 361 0000.
