COGTA Gives EThekwini Municipal Public Accounts Committee The Thumbs Up

ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

28 OCTOBER 2022

The eThekwini Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) has been given the thumbs up for attaining 100 percent for their oversight on unauthorised, irregular, fruitless, and wasteful expenditure (UIFWE).

MPAC is the Council Committee responsible for investigating and making recommendations to Council on the recovery or write-off of UIFWE related matters and is required to report quarterly using a tool developed by COGTA. The tool is intended to assess the functionality on UIFWE and to assist municipal initiatives to reduce UIFWE.

The report was tabled at a Full Council meeting yesterday, 27 October, by the Deputy Chairperson of MPAC, Councillor Pearl Mkhize.

“We are proud to report, as per the assessment of MPAC's functionality on UIFWE oversight for the fourth quarter ending 30 June 2022 to have achieved 100 percent functionality,” said Councillor Mkhize.

Council also approved a host of events and conferences to be held in the City in the coming months. This gives testimony to Durban being awarded Africa’s Leading Meetings and Conference Destination earlier this month at the Africa Travel Awards 2022. The most anticipated of these events is the Kingship Certificate handover to King Misuzulu kaZwelithini by the State President tomorrow, 29 October. Council was also briefed on the state of readiness for the event.

Other events include the 25th TCI Global Conference taking in November 2022, the All-Africa Karate Championship at the end of November, and the first three-day Energy Transformation Summit. This summit is expected see 400 Independent Power Producers engage on alternative sources of power.

Authority was also granted for the reprioritisation of the capital budget for the Human Settlements Unit after the Municipality received grant funding from the Human Settlements Development Grant. The funds are to cover costs of the storm disaster interventions and the leasing of temporary accommodation.
