Chairperson of SALGA in KwaZulu-Natal Cllr Nonhle Mkhulisi, MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport & Recreation, honourable Hlengiwe Mavimbela and the Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Cllr Mxolisi Kaunda will launch the 2019 edition of the SALGA KwaZulu-Natal and Department of Sports & Recreation Games. The games will be hosted by eThekwini Municipality early in December. They seek to protect the youth from social ills and spend most of their time participating in sports. Throughout the calendar year, municipalities have been hosting selection sports programmes to identify players who will represent their municipalities in these games. These programmes have culminated into what will be the biggest inter-municipal sports programme on the southern hemisphere. The games are expected to bring together over 5500 players of 16 sports codes.
Sporting codes include soccer, tennis, rugby, boxing, table tennis, chess, karate, dance, swimming, basketball, volleyball, dance, indigenous games, athletics, cricket and netball.
Since the advent of these games a considerable amount of money have been invested in upgrading sports infrastructure to the benefit of communities that did not have this infrastructure before. This sport festival also has economic spin offs for hosting municipality.
The Mayor of eThekwini Municipality Mxolisi Kaunda said the City is used to hosting major sporting events and this time around it will not disappoint. "Visiting municipalities must rest assured that their safety is guaranteed during their stay and beyond. The City is working on a safety and security plan to ensure that there are no incidents of crime during festive season,” said Mayor.
