FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

African Renaissance Concert: A Musical Celebration

The African Renaissance Concert on the 25th of May at the Durban ICC at 6.30 pm will pay tribute to the Festival’s legacy with performances by a vibrant mix of artists. To celebrate the 21st anniversary, tickets are only R150 and are available from Computicket. Bring your family and friends and join in the musical celebration.

Performers at the Concert will perform much loved old and new musical items. On stage will be Maskandi Qadasi and Maqhinga, featuring energetic traditional Zulu Dancers and a full band, Qadasi’s segment is set to give audience members a vibrant reflection of the powerful music and dance forms rooted in KwaZulu Natal. Hailing from Empangeni in the heart of Zululand, David “Qadasi” Jenkins and Maqhinga Radebe are on a quest to revive the powerful sounds of traditional Maskandi music. Both SAMA and SATMA Award nominees in their own right, the duo have taken their fusion of traditional Zulu and western folk music to audiences in the UK, Europe, Asia and throughout South Africa.

Next up will be Zakes Bantwini – affectionately known as the King of Dance – and known for his electrifying presence on stage, is a versatile singer, producer, and songwriter with a knack for a fusion of sound that employs music from different dance genres. Zakes is not just about the music only, he’s also a dedicated ambassador of goodwill. He is an active UNICEF SA Celebrity Advocate, thrusting his energies into something near and dear to his heart to bring about positive change as an ambassador. Recognizing the abundance of talent in South Africa, he has also dedicated some of his time to the development of young artists in South Africa. A pioneer by right, Zakes is credited for breaking out what is now called Durban Kwaito Music (DKM), a genre which finds a perfect balance between house beats and kwaito lyrics, providing a cross-over appeal, but staying true to the kwaito feel.

The highlight performance will see Mi Casa up on stage, a soulful dance trio out of the African continent. Their live horns, vocals and keys combined with deep soulful grooves are translating to an act that is making some noise. Mi Casa has created an energy on stage like no other. Sine 2010 Mi Casa have dominated harts in South Africa with a total of eight number one singles which included their smash hit, Jika, and Don’t Wanna Be Your Friend, both of which went multi-platinum and were the most played songs on national and continental radio platforms. What makes this band unique is their persona and values that are deeply rooted in making music that carries positive vibes and a good uplifting energy. During their international career, Mi Casa have amassed a truly diverse fan base and have seen impactful growth in their following – they are as excited to bring it all back to their roots, firmly anchored in Africa, and continue to grow and share their creative output with their adoring fans the world over.

The African Renaissance Concert will be held on the 25th of May at the Durban ICC from 6.30 pm. Tickets to the concert cost R150 per person and are available at Computicket outlets – don’t miss out.
