During 2021, the Energy Office and Climate Protection Branch split from the Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department to form the Climate Change Department. The Department recently filled the post of Deputy Head; Dr Luyanda Mafumbu, who will lead a strategic review of the work of the department.
Now called the Climate Adaptation Branch, the CAB is responsible for oversight of implementation of adaptation-focused programs in the Durban Climate Change Integrated Implementation Plan; integrated because it draws the City’s two primary climate change strategic documents (Durban Climate Change Strategy (DCCS) and Climate Action Plan (CAP) into one integrated implementation Plan. The latter is due for a review this year, and the intention is to bring both these documents into a unified strategic document for climate change in the City.
The CAB is led by Senior Manager: Climate Adaptation, Dr Sean O’Donoghue, with three scientist posts, of which one is filled at a senior scientist level and two are currently, effectively vacant. The Branch is further supported by a Senior Environmental Technician, a principal clerk and a graduate intern. This page provides updates of projects being implemented in the CAB, including the Durban Research Action Partnership (DCCS DRAP), Durban Adaptation Charter (DAC) and the uMngeni Ecological Infrastructure Partnership (UEIP). The Department’s primary climate change communication tool is the Climate Portal which can be found here.
