Work to upgrade the bustling Randles Road in Sydenham has commenced. The start of the project, which is being undertaken in-house by eThekwini Municipality, marks a significant step forward in ensuring safer, more reliable infrastructure for the community.
Ward 31 Councillor Remona McKenzie said Randles Road is a vital access route for residents, businesses, and healthcare facilities.
“We welcome the start of this upgrade. This milestone demonstrates that perseverance and never giving up yields great outcomes.”
She said when she took office as Councillor in 2021, this was one of the first projects she prioritised after repeated calls from residents and the Sydenham Ratepayers Association.
“Road infrastructure projects are top of our Community Based Plan and Ward Plan. The roads we have planned to be upgraded include Randles Road, Sparks Road, and Waterfall Road. In 2023 when we formed the war room, we continued with renewed focus, ensuring that the voices of the community were heard and action was taken.”
The work currently being undertaken includes resurfacing and reconstruction of damaged road sections. Drainage improvement to prevent flooding during heavy rains will also be prioritised. Pedestrian safety upgrades will be implemented near Shifa Hospital, ensuring safer access for patients and families.
“Traffic flow improvements to ease congestion in surrounding areas, and most importantly, to provide a safe road to travel on form part of the upgrade,” said Councillor McKenzie.
She said improved access to Shifa Hospital will benefit patients, families, and emergency services, while local businesses and commuters will enjoy smoother traffic flow and safer conditions.
